WHAT ARE WE MISSING ABOUT THE FACTORS THAT SHAPE HEALTH ACROSS THE LIFE COURSE?
The Institute of Advanced Studies is honored to welcome Prof. Pam R. Factor-Litvak as part of the Saul J. Farber Distinguished Lectures in Medicine. In her lecture, "The Tip of the Iceberg: Integrating Factors Associated with Health Across the Life Course – Public Health from Theory to Practice", Professor Factor-Litvak will examine the gaps in our understanding of the multiple factors that influence health across the life course. Drawing on data from numerous birth cohorts, she will discuss approaches to addressing these gaps and propose new strategies for data collection and analysis to improve public health.
COURSE DETAILS
When: Tuesday, 20 October 2026, 14:00
Where: Shalzack Hall, Gray Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences Building
Light refreshments will be served before the lecture.
The lecture will be conducted in English.
MORE ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Prof. Pam R. Factor-Litvak, PhD, is Professor of Epidemiology, Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Epidemiology, and Associate Dean for Research Resources at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health.
An epidemiologist specializing in environmental health, her research focuses on the health effects of environmental contaminants. Her work has examined exposure to heavy metals, particularly lead and mercury, and their effects on pregnancy outcomes, childhood development, neurological and neuropsychological function, and reproductive health. She has also investigated environmental exposures including arsenic and their associations with child development.
Her research includes interdisciplinary epidemiological studies of environmental exposures and health outcomes, as well as methodological questions important to environmental epidemiology, including missing exposure and outcome data, selection bias, and the challenges of drawing individual-level conclusions from ecological studies. She holds a PhD from Columbia University.
FULL ABSTRACT
THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG: INTEGRATING FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH HEALTH ACROSS THE LIFE COURSE – PUBLIC HEALTH FROM THEORY TO PRACTICE
Over the past 50 years our understanding of the individual factors influencing health span has increased exponentially. Most studies have focused on individual risk factors, such as heavy metals, environmental chemicals, air pollution, psychosocial factors, structural factors such as measures of racism and other historical events, and contextual factors such as local and national policies. Nevertheless, there are still major gaps which make it difficult to intervene. Using data from numerous birth cohorts, this talk will highlight these gaps, provide examples of addressing the gaps, and propose new data collection and analytic strategies to improve health.
